How Does a Generac Home Generator Work?

A Generac whole-home generator monitors the utility power to turn on instantly in the event of an outage. Running on your existing natural gas or propane supply, the generator communicates with your Automatic Transfer Switch to transfer power back to your utility once a steady voltage returns.

The black switches on your Generac whole-home generator should only be used during emergencies. Accidental shutoffs can lead to a 2800 Error code on your generator’s controller. Here’s how to fix it:

  1. Flip the black interior and exterior shutdown switches to the ON [I] position.
  2. On your controller, press OFF and then Enter.
  3. Press the AUTO button to resolve the 2800 Error code.

If this does not restore functionality to the Generac home generator, contact a Generac dealer for further service.
